All Headlines > WinSCP: Server File Manager, File Editor, Command Line Interface
Posted by TimSlavin at March 27, 2008
I found WinSCP, a very useful bit of Windows software that combines three tools needed to control servers remotely: a file manager, a file editor, and a command line interface. In my downtime, and for fun, I'm setting up a VPS (virtual private server) for Red Wrangler. The biggest hassle has been juggling different tools for different jobs as I install all the software needed to set up then run websites securely. The only other serious Windows tool is PuTTY which only does one thing: a command line interface. WinSCP integrates PuTTY, especially the ability to generate public and private keys used for server authentication, a safer approach than using passwords.
Even better, WinSCP has excellent documentation and an easy install. PuTTY, in contrast, has a poorly designed interface. It's so bad, in my opinion, that I won't even link to it. Besides, it's included with WinSCP.
If you're in the same boat, looking for Windows software tool to control servers, I highly recommend WinSCP. (If you're not, count yourself lucky. Although for me learning how to set up a server is fun.)
